The Artist depicts his deep feelings about
the loss of traditional Chinese culture and moral values in
the evolution of China to a modern society. The clay terracotta
figure from the Chin (Qin) Dynasty, the ruler that established
Chin-a in the year 200 BC, represents the centralization of
state power in ancient times. The figure in robes, from the
Tang Dynasty (12th Century) symbolizes the apex of Chinese culture.
The black chopper, used to chop straw, represents the threat
to culture. The shadow means that modern people have lost their
traditions and as a result their spirit has no home. This prevents
them from dealing with the experiences and changes that modernization
brings.
